Mangshi or Mang (Chinese芒市Thaiเมืองข้อน), formerly named Luxi City (Chinese: 潞西市; pinyin: Lùxī Shì),[1] is a county-level city of Dehong Prefecture, in the west of Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. It is the prefectural seat, and in 1996, Luxi was upgraded to a county-level city.

Name change[edit]

In 2008, 4751 people[1] participated in a public opinion survey in favour of restoring the historical name (Mangshi), with 96.96% supporting a name change to Mangshi.[1] In 2010, the name of the county-level city was formally changed, becoming the very first single-character (excluding the word for city, "市") city in mainland China. The character "市"(shi) in Chinese means "city", "shi" is not only part of proper noun, also a word to describe administrative division. This is different as Jinshi City(津市市) in Hunan Province.

Association football is the most popular sport in Mangshi. Table tennis and basketball are also popular. The 15,000-capacity Dehong Stadium is the largest sports venue by capacity in the city.
